The mainstream media is absolutely giddy that the U.S. unemployment rate has hit a “four-year low” of 7.7 percent. But is unemployment in the United States actually going down? After all, you would think that it should be. The Obama administration has “borrowed” more than 6 trillion dollars from future generations of Americans, interest rates have been pushed to all-time lows, and the Federal Reserve has been wildly printing more money in a desperate attempt to “stimulate” the economy. So have those efforts been successful? Well, according to the mainstream media, the U.S. unemployment rate is falling steadily. Headlines all over the nation boldly declared that “236,000 jobs” were added to the economy in February, but what they didn’t tell you was that the number of Americans “not in the labor force” rose by 296,000. And that is how they are getting the unemployment rate to go down – by pretending that huge numbers of unemployed Americans don’t want jobs. Sadly, as you will see below, the truth is that the percentage of working age Americans that have a job is just 0.1% higher than it was exactly three years ago. And we have not even come close to getting back to where we were before the last economic crisis. For example, more than 146 million Americans were employed back in 2007. But today, only 142.2 million Americanshave a job even though our population has grown steadily since then. So where in the world is this “economic recovery” that they keep talking about?

At this point, the “unemployment rate” has become so meaningless that it really isn’t even worth paying much attention to. If you really want to know what the employment picture looks like in the United States, you need to look at the employment-population ratio.

As Wikipedia tells us, many economists consider the employment-population ratio to be far superior to other measurements of employment…

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development defines the employment rateas the employment-to-population ratio. The employment-population ratio is many American economist’s favorite gauge of the American jobs picture. According to Paul Ashworth, chief North American economist for Capital Economics, “The employment population ratio is the best measure of labor market conditions.” This is a statistical ratiothat measures the proportion of the country’s working-age population (ages 15 to 64 in most OECD countries) that is employed. This includes people that have stopped looking for work.

A chart of the employment-population ratio in the United States over the past several years is posted below…

As you can see, the percentage of Americans with a job fell from about 63 percent to below 59 percent during the last economic crisis. Since that time, it has not risen back above 59 percent. This is the first time in the post-World War II era that we have not seen the employment rate bounce back following a recession. At this point, the employment-population ratio has been below 59 percent for 42 months in a row.

Yes, we should be thankful that things have stabilized, but as you can see there has been no recovery. The percentage of Americans with a job is essentially exactly where it was three years ago. Despite the trillions of dollars that the U.S. government has borrowed, and despite the reckless money printing that the Federal Reserve has been doing, the employment situation in the U.S. has not turned around.

Data for the employment-population ratio from the beginning of 2008is posted below…

So is there anyone out there that still wants to insist that the employment picture in the United States is getting significantly better?

Anyone that wants to claim that “unemployment is going down” should at least wait until the unemployment-population ratio gets back up to 59 percent. Otherwise they just look foolish.

Yes, the Dow is at an all-time high right now. But a bubble is always the biggest right before it bursts.

Most Americans understand that the Dow has been pumped up with all of the funny money that the Fed has been printing. Most Americans understand that the stock market really does not accurately reflect the health of the U.S. economy as a whole.

Just consider these numbers…

-The number of homeless people sleeping in homeless shelters in New York City has increased by 19 percent over the past year.

-The number of Americans on food stamps has risen from 32 million to 47 million while Barack Obama has been in the White House.

-According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 146 million Americans are either “poor” or “low income” at this point.

-Median household income in the United States has fallen for four consecutive years.

No, the truth is that everything is most definitely not fine.

If everything is fine, then why did the Federal Reserve inject another 100 billion dollars into foreign banks during the last full week of February?

The U.S. government and the Federal Reserve are desperately trying to prop up the entire global economy. Unfortunately, the global financial system has been built on a foundation of sand and the tide is coming in.

Back in 2008, a derivatives crisis was one of the primary causes of the worst financial panic since the Great Depression.

So did we learn our lesson?

No, the boys on Wall Street are back at it again as a recent article by Jim Armitage described…

Historically, stock markets, being driven by humans, have tended to have a similar length memory of catastrophes, before making the same dumb mistakes again.

But it hasn’t even been five years since derivatives (on that occasion based on daft mortgages) blew up the world, and yet these exotic creatures have already returned. With a vengeance.

Research from Thomson Reuters declared that banks were creating more derivatives known as asset-backed securities than at any time since before the Lehman Brothers crash. Of those, 22 percent were made up of – and forgive me the alphabet soup here – CDOs and CLOs. The very type of derivatives that exploded last time. At this stage last year, only 6 percent fell into those categories.

In other words, banks are creating more of the riskiest types of the riskiest products.

At some point, we will have another derivatives crisis even worse than the last one.

When that happens, financial markets all over the globe will crash, economic activity will grind to a standstill and unemployment will go skyrocketing once again.

But as you saw above, we have never even come close to recovering from the last crisis.

So you can believe the mind-numbing propaganda that the mainstream media is trying to feed you if you want. Unfortunately, the reality of the matter is that we have not recovered from the last major economic crisis, and another one is rapidly approaching.

I hope that you are getting ready.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama raised anew the issue of cutting entitlements such as Medicare and Social Security as a way out of damaging budget cuts, a White House official said on Sunday, as both sides in Washington tried to limit a fiscal crisis that may soon hit millions of Americans.

Signaling he might be ready to explore a compromise to end automatic spending cuts that began late Friday, Obama mentioned reforming these entitlement programs in calls with lawmakers from both parties on Saturday afternoon.

“He’s reaching out to Democrats who understand we have to make serious progress on long-term entitlement reform and Republicans who realize that if we had that type of entitlement reform, they’d be willing to have tax reform that raises revenues to lower the deficit,” White House senior economic official Gene Sperling said on Sunday on the CNN program “State of the Union.”

Republicans have long argued that the only way to tame budget deficits over the long haul is by slowing the cost of sprawling social safety net programs.

These include the Social Security retirement program and Medicare and Medicaid healthcare programs for the elderly, disabled and poor that are becoming more expensive as a large segment of the U.S. population hits retirement age.

While Obama also has proposed some savings on these programs, he has insisted that significant new tax revenues be part of the deficit-reduction formula, an idea Republicans so far reject.

Budget fights in Congress took their most serious turn in years on Friday when $85 billion in indiscriminate spending cuts known as “sequestration” began to kick in after both parties failed to agree on how to stop them.

Democrats predict the automatic cuts could soon cause air-traffic delays, meat shortages as food safety inspections slow down, and hundreds of thousands of furloughs for federal workers.

As the budget battles rage on in Washington, sources said Obama plans to nominate on Monday Sylvia Mathews Burwell to head to White House Office of Management and Budget. A veteran of the Bill Clinton White House, Burwell is president of the Walmart Foundation, which handles the corporation’s charitable efforts.

Neither Sperling nor White House spokesmen would provide further details on Obama’s conversations on Saturday with members of Congress, and they did not identify the lawmakers to whom the president spoke.

Obama’s mention of entitlement reform may help bring Republicans to the table to halt the cuts. Republican leaders also made soothing noises on Sunday about the need to avoid a government shutdown on March 27, when funding runs out for most federal programs.

BOEHNER’S MAXIMUM EFFORT

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, interviewed on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” said he “absolutely” would do whatever it takes to keep the government operating. Toward that end, he will seek House passage this week of a “continuing resolution” to fund the government through September 30, when the fiscal year ends.

Lately, some rank-and-file Democrats and Republicans have been sending signals that they are willing to compromise to end a two-year-old deadlock over tax and entitlement reforms.

Last week, conservative Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said he was open to raising $600 billion in new tax revenue if Democrats accepted significant changes to Medicare and Medicaid as part of a long-term budget deal.

A few days later, liberal Democratic Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland told Reuters that he had discussed with Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid the possibility of replacing the automatic spending cuts with a mix of entitlement reforms and tax increases.

“Democrats know we have to do entitlement reforms and Republicans know they have to do revenues (increases),” Cardin said.

Now that they are in place, the $85 billion in spending cuts must be carried out by September 30 if no alternative is found. Half of those cuts would hit the military with the rest scattered over thousands of other domestic programs.

Economists have warned that such a heavy dose of belt tightening over such a short period will slow U.S. economic growth and potentially cost 750,000 jobs.

Speaking of the search for alternatives, Boehner said on “Meet the Press:” “I don’t think anyone quite understands how it gets resolved.”

No matter how Obama and Congress resolve the 2013 battle, this round of automatic spending cuts is only one of a decade’s worth of annual cuts totaling $1.2 trillion mandated by the sequestration law.

DEEP DIVISIONS STILL

Deep divisions between Democrats and Republicans have soured previous negotiations.

Slamming the door on Democrats’ demands for new tax hikes, Boehner said that Obama “got $650 billion of higher taxes on the American people on January the first. How much more does he want?” He was referring to the higher tax rate that began in the new year on households making more than $450,000 a year.

“It’s time for the president and Senate Democrats to get serious about the long-term spending problem that we have,” Boehner said.

In the meantime, both Democrats and Republicans were hoping to win the immediate fight over the automatic spending cuts so that they are best positioned in any upcoming battles over long-term budget deficits.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell on Sunday played down the severity of the automatic cuts, describing them as modest.

“We’re willing to talk to him (Obama) about reconfiguring the same amount of spending reduction over the next six months,” McConnell said on CNN. “The American people look at this and say: ‘Gee, I’ve had to cut my budget more than this,’ - probably on numerous occasions over the last four years because we’ve had such a tepid economy now for four long years.”

At the heart of Washington’s persistent fiscal crises is disagreement over how to slash the budget deficit and gain control of the $16.7 trillion national debt, bloated over the years by wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and government stimulus for the ailing economy.

Government red ink also rose over the last decade after the enactment of across-the-board tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 secured by President George W. Bush.

(Additional reporting by Will Dunham and Philip Barbara; Editing by Alistair Bell, Philip Barbara and Eric Beech)

I hope the rest of the democrats have more smarts and balls than the president! Social Security has not one thing to do with the deficit and they need to keep their grubby hands off of it! It’s the only thing that stands in the way of complete destitution for many people in this country. It’s one of the few programs that almost all average citizens like and believe should be continued unchanged. The corporations and banksters created this nightmare for the wars that they wanted to protect their interests abroad - let them pay for it!!! It’s about time that they start making sacrifices - like smaller salaries and smaller profits! Enough is enough!

So, I posted this: Are we really just going to sit by and let this happen? What is it going to take? Will they have to come after your group - be they evangelicals, doctors, or - I just realized something. Those are the only 2 groups, other than Jews, that I can think of that the government has not already gone after. Think about it. They have repeatedly gone after women’s rights. They have been trying for at least a decade to destroy the workers unions. They have attacked immigrants, painting them as lazy thieving people out to take the working mans jobs and money. They created and upheld the new Jim Crow statutes through the school to prison systems they have created for young African-Americans. They continually marginalize the LGQBT communities using the church and evangelicals to help them. They attack the poor making them responsible for their poverty even though most of the poor in this country work 2 or more jobs trying to make a living but they can’t for 2 reasons: 1. lack of opportunities and 2. for their to be those with extreme wealth, there must exist many who have next to nothing. The government has repeatedly demonized anyone who dares to criticize their policies including, journalists, bloggers, whistle blowers, Constitutionalists, Libertarians, authors, and the Occupy Movement. Now they are even going after gun enthusiasts (I’m all for background checks - they are really important. But they criminalizing of over 150 different types of weapons is far over the top and DOES infringe on our constitutional rights.) Almost everyone in this country belongs in one or more of the groups I just described. The only people who don’t would be wealthy older white males - I guess that would be the real problem. These men live in such a state of pathetic fear, of losing control over others, that they have literally turned on and demonized almost every citizen in this country. They have eviscerated the constitution to the point that it is nothing more than a piece of paper that they occasionally give lip service to. So I ask again - why are people not enraged over all of this? Why are we not putting aside the petty differences they have created between us and standing together, put a halt to this war they have waged on all of us? We have the real power. We have the ability to bring this country to a halt just by refusing to buy anything for 2 weeks (other than the most basics like food). By not going to work for those 2 weeks and not buying a drop of gasoline. And instead of going to work, we could go out into our neighborhoods and go to our locals government centers and stand together in protest of the totalitarian oligarchical system they have created. We must do this! Even if you don’t believe it would work, it is the right thing to do. And as moral citizens we have an obligation to do the right thing. It doesn’t matter if what we do succeeds or fails, it doesn’t matter if we are criticized by those in power, it only matters that it is the right thing to do and that we do it. We must stop them before it becomes to late to take a stand.

I got the following immature, conservative, pathetic response in return:

As a white male, gun owner, evangelical, former union worker, and only educated with a high school diploma former business owner who now hires people for another company, let me make an observation. 1. What women’s rights are being attacked? Voting? Property ownership? Ability to work? Please go through the bill of rights and find one that is being violated. 2. Immigrant status? Yes, we have been cracking down on that for a century now, i.e. Ellis Island, our nations policy is open door, we just want to know you are here. The border hospitals in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California are over run with trespassers stealing our healthcare and not paying for it. I know, the collection agency I work for calls these fake made up names and numbers trying to recover the millions they have charged that hospitals do treat them by law for. If you are a citizen, food assistance is a long drawn out application, if an immigrant ( and I use that term lightly ) you check three boxes and you get immediate assistance. Yes, they will work hard and are not lazy, but they work for cash and dont pay taxes. 3. No food, no gas, no working? Great in theory but you are either stocking up, filling up, or saving up to do so, or you are replenishing afterwards. Bottom line, at the end of it all you are out of a job, refilling your tank and cabinets and an immigrant has taken the job you wouldnt go to for two weeks. What you are describing is corporate terrorism, not civil disobedience. Punish the people that give you the ability to earn a living and support your family. Stop working= no pay, no pay= no taxes, no taxes= no welfare programs funded, no welfare programs funded= extreme poverty and more voters for Democrat Liberals who want to give more funding. Government can only make revenue by taking from working Americans. So, lets move to the other points. 4. Union workers rights? Not under attack, period. It is rhetoric. I will only have this discussion with a person who is a fellow card carrying union member too. I was a member of UFCW and UAW. I am sorry, but the UAW does not allow members a fair vote, or a choice in candidates, or deciding to opt out of paying a portion of dues that go toward candidates we did not support. I was on the UAW PAC and told I could not endorse a libertain, green, or republican candidate on Union property, including the assembly plant floor. Democrats derived, and enforced auto standards through the EPA, and hurt union jobs, they also enacted NAFTA. Evil carrot on a stick. Cheaper Chinese goods that we can tax, but the American built counterpart items were more because we have safe factories, fair wages, and pay taxes and healthcare for our employees, Chinese and Indian factories, no. We lost six figure totals on jobs and eight figure loss in GDP since then. So, domestic corporate terrorism is your answer? I don’t see that as a logical choice. Sorry.

And here is my final response, point by point, with sources, so that this person doesn’t miss anything.

1. Women’s rights: Women are denied equal pay for equal work. Women are being denied equal access to healthcare. Women are being attacked economically. Women are being assumed guilty in rape cases first - that they essentially are lying.

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=206084

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=206007

http://thinkprogress.org/2011/02/16/gop-women-kids/

http://www.tnr.com/blog/83387/house-republican-spending-cuts-pell-education-usda-pbs

http://www.blogforchoice.com/archives/2011/02/birth-control-f.html

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/02/18/6080756-house-passes-measure-stripping-planned-parenthood-funding

2.War on Immigrants -

Immigrants never were treated fairly. The 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act grudgingly went further than previous laws. It made immigrants of all races eligible for citizenship based on strict quotas.

White Judeo/Christian Europeans get preferential treatment. People of color get shortchanged. The 1996 Immigrant Responsibility Act and Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act proved bipartisan harshness.

Due process and judicial fairness were ignored. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) agents were empowered to detain legal immigrants without bond, deport them without discretionary relief, restrict their right to counsel, bar judicial appeals, and use misdemeanors or youthful indiscretions be reasons for deportation.

No second chances are allowed. Unwanted immigrants get unwelcome messages. Immigration courts target them unfairly. They don’t leave home easily.

They come to America because NAFTA and other exploitive trade agreements destroyed their ability to earn a living at home. Come north or perish. Millions have no choice.

ICE heads them off at the border. Gloves off policy targets them ruthlessly. Wanting to live free and survive is criminalized. Poor, desperate people are called dangerous.

Immigration reform won’t help them. Earlier proposed legislation replicated Bracero Program harshness. From 1942 – 1964, it persecuted immigrants ruthlessly.

Indentured servitude was policy. Immigrants became serfs with no rights. Employers were empowered to exploit them. They got temporary low wage jobs.

They were cheated out of pay. Employers seized their documents. They were held in virtual captivity. They were denied vital medical care or benefits for injuries received.

A cycle of abuse punished them. They couldn’t resist or complain. As undocumented workers, they had no rights. They were sent home when no longer needed.

Why expect better now. Conditions today are worse than earlier. Whatever final congressional legislation emerges, expect it to reflect anti-immigrant harshness.

Since 2004, Border Patrol staff doubled. Numbers are ninefold greater than 30 years ago. Plans call for increasing their numbers. Untold billions more will be spent. Efforts will be as futile as earlier.

Greater militarization of Mexico’s border is planned. So are harsher crackdowns. Drone surveillance is proposed. A commission of governors, state attorneys general and community leaders will decide if policies succeed.

Senators say they’ll monitor “progress of securing our border and make a recommendation regarding when the bill’s security measures outlined….are completed.”

It could take years. Immigrants who come forth voluntarily will get “probationary status.” It’s ill-defined. They’ll have no rights. They’ll be at the mercy of federal and local authorities, as well as exploitive employers.

They can be deported on a whim. They’ll have no right of appeal. They’ll be separated from family members. Parents and children will be split.

The path to citizenship requires millions of undocumented immigrants to wait 11 years or longer. Many or most perhaps won’t qualify.

“Comprehensive immigration reform” is a figure of speech. Reality suggests otherwise. Previous Bush and Obama initiatives failed. They were aborted.

Immigrant rights aren’t prioritized. They’re exploited and abused. They’re not wanted. Most come from Mexico and Central America. At best, they can expect Bracero Program 2.0.

They’ll be exploited, persecuted, denied all rights, underpaid, and hung out to dry when not wanted. America’s race to the bottom assures it. Planned immigration reform assures none at all. It’s the American way.

A Final Comment

On Tuesday, Obama addressed immigration reform. His comments were long on what he does best – doublespeak duplicity, promises made to be broken, and disdain for society’s least advantaged.

His scheme largely mirrors what eight senators proposed. It’s long on draconian inequity and short on long denied solutions.

Likely congressional legislation will discourage undocumented immigrants hoping for better. Bipartisan racism prevents it.

The Immigrant Solidarity Networks says “We are all humans (and) no one is illegal.” It’s long past time legal and undocumented immigrants were treated that way.

http://www.veteranstoday.com/2013/01/31/waging-war-on-immigrants/

As for not paying taxes, well they don’t pay federal or state but they pay every other tax - sales, property, luxury, gasoline, just to mention a few.

3. Yes, you might be correct, I even admitted that in the original post, but that is not the point. The point is it would be the right thing to do and it is the only thing that stands a chance of getting their attention - hit them in their corporate bottom line! As for “punishing those who allow us to make a living” - corporations are not people, they have no feelings and punishment is not the point - the point is to make them sit up and listen and change their behavior.

4. War on Unions - Right to work laws cripple unions, allow lower wages across the country, turn the worker into a slave at the mercy of their employer. I call that terrorism! They destroy the economy whenever they are enacted and create even more poverty and homelessness.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2012/12/10/how-right-to-work-laws-could-reshape-michigans-economy/

In 1947, the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) was amended to expressly protect the right of workers to not join a union. Specifically, Section 7 of the NLRA expressly states that employees shall have the right to refrain from joining a union.

Further, there are two U.S. Supreme Court cases that special-interest supporters of so-called “Right-to-Work” tend to overlook:

1. In the 1963 NLRB v. General Motors Corp. (373 U.S. 734) case, the court ruled that employees could not be forced to join a union under any circumstances.

2. In the 1988 Communications Workers v. Beck (487 U.S. 735) case, the court ruled that workers could not be forced to pay the portion of their union dues that went for political purposes with which they did not agree.

The facts are plain and simple, under the current federal law no worker can be forced to join a union or pay dues for political purposes. A “right-to-work” law in Indiana is redundant and unnecessary.

Currently, less than half of the states in the country have adopted “Right-to-Work” laws. However, many special-interest supporters of so-called “Right-to-Work” claim that surrounding states are in the process of passing “Right-to-Work” legislation. This is misleading at best. What they fail to mention is that all of these states have repeatedly rejected “Right-to-Work” laws even though supporters continue their antiquated campaigns year after year. Additionally, Colorado voters soundly defeated a “Right-to-Work” ballot initiative in 2008.

“Right-to-work” laws are outdated and a throw-back to the anti-union agenda of another era. “Right-to-work” state laws are redundant and unneeded when the current federal law is actually examined.

“Right-to-work” laws represent destructive economic development policy guided by extreme partisan politics. The goal should be to raise the standard of living for hard-working Hoosier families, not lower it. Hard-working Hoosier families deserve better than an antiquated law designed to raise corporate profits and lower worker wages and benefits.

Perhaps my brainwashed friend should find out who is really behind the right to work laws before he starts believing all their rhetoric. http://www.americanrightsatwork.org/the-anti-union-network/national-right-to-work/national-right-to-work.html

5. You have a lot of nerve calling the boycotting of corporations and their control terrorism. Perhaps you are the real terrorist or at least a brainwashed shill to their cause. Maybe that’s because you make your living by torturing the poor for money they simply don’t have. Nice job! You need to stop watching so much tv and listening to conservative radio - they have completely messed up your head.

So they go to jail for money laundering just like we would and we get the healthcare, pension, and 126 days a year for full time work that they get. Sounds like a great plan.
